Fascinating presentation! Are there cities/communities in the U.S. that operate with this kind of amazing social capital and autonomy?

49:16
Are there any public health concerns that pervade the favelas? What power structures exist within the favela?

50:35
it is such another way to think of the small and primitive informal housing structures in our U.S. cities….(and gift! thank you)

58:52
Thanks for this interesting talk! How/do the programs that CatComm offers engage with insurgent urban movements such as MTST in Rio? How do the “formal/legal” organizations like catcomm navigate the legal gray zone (eg illegal land occupations) to further their goals (and vice versa)?

59:46
As future planners and policy makers, how can we make sure to not overregulate in order to sustain creative hotbeds, without communities having been forced into creativity due to neglect? Essentially, how can we sustain/create that sweet spot you mentioned?

If you do not have time for this question, since I am asking 2, I understand, but I just thought I would inquire anyways. How do favelas deal with security issues? I have often heard of favelas as areas that can be dominated by gang violence, thus how do these communities work towards some kind of policing that may be less scary and more in tune with wanting to keep communities safe instead?

Can we have those links in the chat?

Thank you! Beautiful talk and ideas! So much to learn as we struggle to solve the housing crisis in the U.S. I saw permaculture mentioned in one of the slides. Has there been an active permaculture movement in the Favelas?

01:09:13
Has the network made efforts to influence "formal" infrastructure systems to support favela needs and regional connectivity (transportation, digital resources, sewerage, etc)? Any insights about the power for institutional change?

01:10:33
Certainly will follow up ! Thanks and sorry for the big multifaceted question

01:16:16
Are community leaders and community members in favelas thinking about climate change?

01:20:06
The staged approach makes sense. Thanks for the response and with hope for this next phase!
