Tisch College Solomont Speaker Series: Jan Grabowski
Join Tisch College for a critical conversation with author, Holocaust historian and professor, Jan Grabowski. Grabowski is one of two editors of 2018’s critically acclaimed Night Without End: The Fate of Jews in Selected Counties of Occupied Poland (forthcoming in English from Indiana University Press). Six million Jews were murdered in the Holocaust; nearly half of these were Polish Jews. Soon after the release of Grabowski's book, the Polish government—in its ongoing effort to exonerate the nation of any role in the murders of Polish Jews during the Nazi occupation—found Grabowski guilty of defaming a long-deceased Polish village official in the book. Ever since, Grabowski has been fighting to appeal a case that has been condemned by Jewish organizations, academics and historians as an attack on academic freedom, freedom of the press and the very understanding and exploration of Holocaust history. Grabowski’s case has become a well-known part of an authoritarian trend that threatens intellectual and political freedom across disciplines and in civil society at large. On August 16, 2021, an appeals court in Warsaw overturned the lower court's decision and dismissed the lawsuit. The battle is far from over, however: the plaintiffs and the Polish authorities plan to file a motion to have the sentence dismissed by the Supreme Court.

This event will be guest moderated by Dr. Edna Friedberg, historian at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C.
